For exercises and to learn about bass technique, I have two books:

Understanding Rhythm and Timing:

Develop a strong sense of timing and groove. Practice with a metronome and play along with different styles of music to internalise different rhythms. Rhythm can be studied but it's one of the elements of music that I think becomes internalised more than anything else. You feel the rhythms and don't think about them that much.

Exercise: Take an arpeggio/scale and take it through some different rhythms with a metronome. You need to know the different rhythms but, as importantly, the rests too.

Ear Training

Develop your ear by learning to recognize intervals, chords, and rhythms by ear.

Learn Patterns

This is the superpower of the bass and something that makes it easier to learn.

Music Theory Basics:

Learn the basics of music theory, including rhythms, chord progressions, and scales. This knowledge is crucial for effective communication with other musicians and for songwriting, learning tunes, improvisation, learning different genres and much more.

Playing in Different Styles:

Explore various genres such as rock, jazz, funk, blues, and pop. Each style has its unique techniques and feel, and being versatile will make you a more well-rounded bassist.

Reading and Notation:

Learn to read standard notation and tablature. Being able to read music will open up more opportunities and make learning new pieces easier. It's also fantastic for studying and mastering rhythms.

Develop a Practice Routine

This will be something you'll constantly need to asses and change up. It has to be something you WILL stick to so adjust frequency accordingly. Obviously the more time you put in, the better, as long as you're pushing yourself and not playing the same old thing all the time.

Think about your goals, write them down, and then break them up into tangible practice sessions.

Transcribe

Transcribe bass lines from your favorite songs to understand different playing styles. You'll learn the importance of tone, timing, taste, and groove in your bass playing as well as what techniques you need to learn.

Know your why

Don't lose sight of why you're learning bass. This becomes your North Star and guides your practice sessions as well as keeps you going when you lose momentum or inspiration. Just think about why you play bass and what you want to achieve and you'll get back on track more easily.
