How To Turn ‘Theory’ Into Great Bass Lines

This was a question I got from a subscriber:

"How can I incorporate music theory into my bass playing?"

I think there's a lot of confusion around music theory:

  • What is it and how can I use it?
  • Will it make my playing cold?
  • Why is it so boring??

I'll answer those questions whilst showing you what you want to know: how to create bass lines using music theory knowedge.

There are three broad areas of music theory:

  1. Rhythm
  2. Melody
  3. Harmony

Know a bit about each, and creative doors spring up all around you. It's awesome.

I have a drum loop for you to download and play along with. You'll find it below. In terms of the shapes I show and many other concepts, it's all in my Music Theory For Bass Players course if you're interested in going deeper.

Music Theory for Bass Players

E Major Scale Harmony + Drum Loop

Here are the seven arpeggios formed on each degree of the E Major scale:

Use this drum loop to apply the ideas taught in the lesson.

Stick to the process of learning the basic elements of music theory. You don't need to know everything all at once, but you do need to start to create with it immediately. You will also hear these ideas in music so don't stop trying to figure out bass lines by ear.
