One of my students, Keith, is taking From Beginner To Bassist. In that course, there is a section on harmonising a scale, and in it, I stress the importance of learning to do so and why.
Sometimes things don't sink in the first time, and Keith had this question:
Wanted to ask you many times you have mentioned in your course that harmonising a scale in extremely important on one string please explain why and how does it benefit in playing?
It's really quite profound how many areas this helps you in, including:
- Understanding harmony and chord progressions.
- Song learning.
- Jamming and improvising.
- Composing.
- Writing bass lines (which is a specialised form of composing).
In this lesson, I'll show you exactly how you can use triads, arpeggios, modes, and pentatonic scales to make music.
I go into this a lot in my beginner course, From Beginner To Bassist, which was written to help you go from a beginner to intermediate, learning the elements of great bass playing and a solid foundation.
Music Theory For Bass Players goes much deeper into the mechanics of music and how you can use them to create amazing bass lines, fills, and solos.
