In this lesson, I’ll show you the essential muting techniques every bassist should know—whether you play fingerstyle, slap, with a pick, or use the floating thumb. Clean up your tone, gain control over your sound, and stop the noise for good.
Unwanted string noise can make even great bass lines sound messy. Learning to mute properly is one of the most important techniques you’ll ever master. Here are the key muting approaches I cover in the lesson above.
Fingerstyle Muting
When playing fingerstyle, you can your plucking hand fingers and/or thumb to mute the strings you're not playing. This helps eliminate sympathetic vibrations and keeps your lines sounding clean and focused.
Fretting Hand Muting
Your fretting hand isn’t just for pressing notes—it’s also a powerful muting tool. By lightly resting unused fingers on nearby strings, you can dampen noise, stop ringing, and clean up your sound—especially during rests or rhythmic stabs.
Floating Thumb Technique
This technique involves resting your thumb on the strings you're not playing as you move across the fretboard. It’s a great way to control resonance and avoid unwanted string rumble when playing across multiple strings.
Slap Bass Muting
Slap playing can quickly get chaotic without proper muting. Use your fretting hand to dampen strings between notes, and make sure your thumb and fingers don’t let unused strings ring. Tight muting is key to getting that crisp, punchy slap tone.
Pick Bass Muting
When playing with a pick, your picking hand can rest lightly on the strings near the bridge to control sustain and eliminate noise. Combine this with strategic fretting-hand muting to keep things tight, especially in aggressive or fast styles.
It's all in the video lesson above so make sure to give it a watch all the way through.
Muting is one of those invisible skills that separates beginner players from professionals. Mastering these techniques will not only improve your tone but also give you more confidence and control on any stage or studio session.
