I've selected four lessons that will help you understand how the bass fretboard works. Work through them in order. Don't worry about memorising everything immediately — the goal at this stage is simply to start becoming familiar with the instrument.
Find ALL The Notes On Your Bass
Knowing where the notes are on your bass is one of the most useful skills you can develop. In this lesson, you'll learn a simple way to find any note on the fretboard. Don't worry about memorising everything yet — for now, focus on understanding how the fretboard works and being able to work out the notes when you need them.

Three Points On The Fretboard You Should Know
You don't need to memorise the entire fretboard at once. Start with three useful reference points: the open strings, the 5th fret, and the 12th fret. Knowing the notes at these positions gives you useful landmarks that make navigating—and eventually learning—the rest of the fretboard much easier.
Joe Satriani Bass Note Learning Exercise
This is a simple but powerful fretboard exercise I picked up from Joe Satriani. Instead of learning notes through shapes or patterns, you'll choose one note and find every instance of it across the fretboard. It's a great way to gradually build genuine fretboard knowledge rather than relying on memorised patterns.
It works especially well paired with the next lesson.
Really Useful Octave Patterns
Octave shapes are one of the most useful shortcuts on the bass fretboard. Once you can recognise these simple patterns, you'll be able to find the same note in different positions much more quickly. They also provide useful visual landmarks that will help you navigate the fretboard with greater confidence.

5 Octave Patterns For Bass Players
Don't try to master all of this today. Spend a few minutes exploring the fretboard using what you've learned. You'll return to fretboard knowledge throughout the Roadmap.
