Need Fresh Bass Ideas? This Acoustic Bass Jam Can Help You

The acoustic bass guitar is a different beast than your standard electric bass. It makes you play differently, and it requires different techniques to coax out a tune from it.

My Breedlove acoustic bass (Studio BJ350/SM4 for any bass nerds out there, although I'm not sure they make them anymore) lives next to the piano in my hall, and I pick it up often as I'm going about my day.

This kind of environmental change makes me play more, and I needed that this week.

You know how sometimes you feel like you've lost your mojo? Well, that happened to me, and I couldn't think of a lesson to film, even though I have hundreds of ideas written down.

Nothing clicked.

That is, until I picked up the acoustic and started jamming. A little while later, I felt more in the zone, and this lesson is the result of that practice session.

I hope you find it inspiring and, if you're in your own rut, don't worry. Pick up your bass and explore. That's when the magic happens.

There's no PDF for this lesson as it was somewhat impromptu. However, most of the ideas I came up with were sparked by a knowledge of music theory. Everything I teach (and a lot, lot more) can be found in Music Theory For Bass Players.

However, there is a percussion track to play to if you want. It's the one I used in the video lesson, and here it is:

Resources

You can learn how to harmonise the harmonic minor, melodic minor, major, and natural minor scales in my theory course.

That's as well as learning about rhythms and scales, modes, triads, etc, etc, and not just learning, but knowing what to do with them all! Click the link for more details and a complete lesson list.

  • I enjoyed your last impro with triad, sounds cool, and I’d be happy to have a full lesson on using triads over a chord progression
