Master Soul, RnB, Motown & Blues Improvisation

Years ago I went to a Chuck Rainey bass clinic at The Bass Centre in London. He said something along the lines of "there are only a handful of soul bass patterns you need to learn".

He didn't elaborate and I remember wondering what those patterns were!

Years of study and immersion into blues, Motown, RnB, and soul, and I finally know what he meant.

There really are only a few patterns you need to know. You're going to learn them in this lesson. Scroll down for the free PDF with all the shapes.

Of course, patterns are one part of the puzzle. Phrasing, taste, timing, tone, and feel are among some of the other elements to think about when you improvise.

Watch the video below to see what I mean.

9 RnB, Soul, Motown & Blues Patterns For Bass Players

This PDF is actually from a previous lesson:

9 Rhythm and Blues/Soul Bass Patterns

All you need to do is move the red blobs in the PDF below to the root note you need which is F in the examples for this lesson.

If you're a fan of this style of bass playing (and I recommend you get into it because there's so much you can learn for other styles and good bass playing in general) you might like to check out my book RnB, Soul & Motown Style Basslines.

There's also a soul bass course coming out soon...
